| ID: | 1119 | | Title: | Study shows Indoor Pools may not be Safe for Babies - http://www.aap.org/ | | Description: | Belgian studies link indoor swimming as an infant can cause your baby to be three times more likely to suffer from asthma and bronchitis later in life. Byproducts in the chlorine can effect the developing airways of your children and cause them to not be able to defend themselves against lung disease.
One of these byproducts, trichloramine, is formed when chlorine, saliva, sweat, or urine are combined. This is the typical "chlorine" smell that can be detected around indoor pools especially.
But dont pull your kids out of the water just yet. Learning to swim can be more beneficial than avoiding the risks that chlorine may impose, perhaps do it at a slightly older age. Families with a pool at their home, for instance, will want to be sure their children know how to swim as soon as possible.
Just be aware of the signs of "over-chlorination". Things like a very strong chlorine smell in the air, or swimmers complaining of eye irritation are a good indication that the air around the pool can be saturated by chlorine byproducts.
